Christina Ottander is a Professor in Science Education at the Department of Science and Mathematics Education, Umeå University, Sweden, with a PhD in Plant Physiology. She is affiliated with the Umeå Mathematics Education Research Centre (UMERC). Her research focuses on socio-scientific issues, teacher professional development, and early years science education, emphasizing didactic modeling for sustainable development. She actively collaborates with teachers on projects integrating teaching development and research.
Her research interests include exploring how educators can foster students’ engagement with scientific concepts through emotionally resonant teaching methods, particularly in evolution education and sustainability. She investigates pedagogical strategies such as action-oriented models in preschools and the role of wonder in science learning. Recent work examines continuity in science education across early school transitions and digital literacy in scientific information searching.
Publications highlight themes like citizenship education in vocational programs, semantic profiles in teaching continuity, and the integration of drawing activities in early science education. Her work often bridges formal and informal learning environments, emphasizing societal relevance and collaborative practices between schools and communities.
