Dr. Christina Marisa Getrich is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Maryland (College Park), affiliated with the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. Her work focuses on immigration policy impacts, health disparities among Latinx populations, and strategies for health equity. She holds a PhD from the University of New Mexico (2008), and taught at San Diego City College and UNM before joining UMD in 2014.
Education: PhD in Anthropology (University of New Mexico, 2008), MA in Applied Anthropology (Northern Arizona University, 2001), BA in Anthropology (College of Wooster, 1997).
Research interests include: 1) Immigration enforcement policies and their effects on family well-being, 2) DACA recipients' legal precarity and activism, 3) Community health worker interventions to improve care access, and 4) U.S.-Mexico borderlands dynamics. Her book Border Brokers (2019) examines second-generation Mexican youth navigating restrictive policies.
Recent publications analyze DACA recipients' health care navigation challenges, everyday activism strategies, and the role of cultural competence training in medical education. She leads the Pandemic Readiness Initiative studying trust-building by community health workers post-pandemic.
Awards include NSF grants (2014, 2016), AAUW Dissertation Fellowship, and University of Maryland research awards. She advises graduate students conducting participatory research with marginalized immigrant communities.
