Christina Shuttleworth Kraus is the Thomas A. Thacher Professor of Latin and Director of Graduate Studies at Yale University’s Department of Classics. Her research focuses on ancient historiography, Latin prose style, and scholarly commentaries, with particular expertise in Caesar, Livy, and Tacitus. She holds a BA from Princeton and PhD from Harvard, with prior teaching roles at NYU, UCL, and Oxford.
Dr. Kraus leads interdisciplinary initiatives such as ARCHAIA (Yale’s program for antiquity and premodern studies) and serves on editorial boards for projects like Brill’s Historiography of Rome and its Empire series. Her 2009 Martin Classical Lectures explored Tacitus’ Agricola and its scholarly reception. Recent work examines early modern commentaries on Ennius’ Annales.
Her research integrates close textual analysis with broader cultural questions, addressing how ancient historians shaped narratives and how modern scholars interpret them. Major contributions include studies on Livy’s historiographical techniques, Caesar’s narrative strategies, and the evolution of classical commentary traditions.
