Dickerson specializes in African American and Native American history, focusing on Black-Indigenous relations, religious institutions, and historical migration patterns. Her research emphasizes the interconnectedness of these narratives, particularly through the lens of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church.
Her publications include a monograph, Black Indians and Freedmen: The African Methodist Episcopal Church and Indigenous Americans, 1816-1916 (University of Illinois Press, 2021), peer-reviewed articles in ETHNOHISTORY, METHODIST HISTORY, and the OXFORD RESEARCH ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AFRICAN HISTORY, and multiple scholarly book reviews. Recent work analyzes the AME Church's engagement with Indigenous communities and Black religious radicalism.
