Dr. Christianne Beekman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Florida State University (FSU), affiliated with the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL). She leads a research group focused on investigating structural-tuning of magnetic and electronic properties in strongly correlated oxides and frustrated magnets.
- Education: Master's and Doctorate in Physics from Leiden University (2005, 2010)
- Postdoctoral Experience: University of Toronto and Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Her research program explores how epitaxial strain and stoichiometry control strongly correlated insulators for photovoltaic applications, and frustrated antiferromagnets for exotic magnetic phenomena. Key techniques include pulsed laser deposition for thin film synthesis, and neutron/x-ray scattering and capacitive torque magnetometry for characterization.
Publications highlight her work on spin ice physics, magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and impact ionization mechanisms. She was awarded an NSF CAREER grant in 2019 for studies on degeneracy-breaking effects in frustrated heterostructures.
- Scientific Awards:
- NSF CAREER Award (2019)
Her group has mentored graduate researchers including Sangsoo Kim, Bijay DC, and former advisees Biwen Zhang, Kevin Barry, and Christie Thompson. Collaborative efforts span institutions like Oak Ridge National Laboratory and University of Toronto.
