Christiane Eisenberg was a Professor of British History and Society at the Centre for British Studies, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, serving as its Director during three periods (2008-2010, 2013-2015, 2019-2021). She retired in October 2021 after over 23 years in the role. Educated at the University of Bielefeld (M.A., 1982; Ph.D., 1986) and the University of Hamburg (Habilitation, 1996), she held positions at Bielefeld and Hamburg universities before joining Humboldt. She was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1987-1988).
Her research focuses on social and cultural history, particularly the interplay between market economies and modern societies, as well as historical comparisons and cultural transfer between Britain and Germany. Key themes include cooperatives, labor movements, commercialized sport as a global phenomenon, and the intersections of sport and financial history. Her current book project, The Sporting Spirit of Capitalism, explores these connections through a British lens, re-examining Max Weber’s theories on capitalism.

No specific grants or student advisees are listed in available texts, though her extensive publications reflect collaborative research in historical studies.
