Prof Miles Taylor is Chair of British History and Society at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 2021, previously holding professorships at the University of York (UK) and Southampton. His research focuses on 19th-century British history, imperialism, parliamentary systems, and India's colonial history. He earned a PhD from the University of Cambridge (1989), with prior studies at Queen Mary College London and Harvard University as a Kennedy Scholar.
Research interests include British empire dynamics, parliamentary representation, and the socio-political dimensions of colonial policies. His major works include Empress: Queen Victoria and India (Yale, 2018) and co-edited The Utopian Universities (2020). Current projects involve completing a book on UK parliamentary representation since the 18th century and a funded study on salt, protest, and public health in India.
He co-convenes the History of Universities Seminar and edits the New Cambridge History of Britain. Awards include Fellowships of the Royal Historical Society and Royal Asiatic Society. He advises the National Portrait Gallery and the Journal of British Studies.
His articles span topics like constitutional history, populist movements, and imperial legacies. Taylor actively bridges historical scholarship with contemporary debates on governance, education, and post-colonial identities.
