Christiane Abel

Christiane Abel is a Professor in the French Translation and Interpretation (TI) program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) since 2001. She serves as the French TI Program Coordinator since 2009 and maintains a vibrant private practice as a freelance translator and conference interpreter for clients including the US Department of State, NGOs, and international organizations.

• Specializes in international development, microfinancing, and international humanitarian law
• Certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) and active member of the Association internationale des interprètes de conférence (AIIC)
• Teaches courses in interpretation theory/practice, sight translation, and advanced translation

Her research explores trauma-informed interpreting practices, informed by her work at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She emphasizes professionalism and market readiness through a "client-provider" teaching philosophy.
