معرفی
Professor Christiana Ruhrberg is a distinguished academic at the University College London (UCL) Institute of Ophthalmology, where she holds the position of Professor of Neuronal and Vascular Biology. Having joined UCL in 2007 as a Lecturer, she progressed to Reader in 2008 and was appointed Professor in 2011. Her research focuses on the critical interactions between blood vessels and neural tissues during development and in disease states.
Her primary research interests include neurovascular co-patterning, vascular dysfunction in diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, VEGF signaling mechanisms, and the role of the extracellular matrix in vascular development. The Ruhrberg lab investigates how growing blood vessels integrate into developing organs like the brain, retina, heart, and lungs without disrupting neural organization, with particular attention to microglia-vascular interactions and vascular regeneration in ischemic conditions.
Professor Ruhrberg's publication record demonstrates consistent high-impact contributions to vascular biology, with recent work spanning neurovascular template formation, vascular remodeling in obesity, mechanical control of vascular morphogenesis, and single-cell analysis of hematopoietic development. Her research bridges basic science with clinical applications, targeting therapeutic interventions for neovascular eye disease and critical limb ischemia.
Among her notable recognitions are the Young Cell Biologist of the Year award (1996), the Werner-Risau-Prize (2003), an MRC Career Development Award (2003-2007), Wellcome Trust New Investigator and Investigator Awards (2011-2022), the Cheryll Tickle Medal, and the Judah Folkman Award from the North American Vascular Biology Organisation.
As an academic leader, Professor Ruhrberg serves as co-PI and supervisor on the UCL 4-year PhD programme in Cardiovascular Biomedicine and teaches across multiple UCL programs including MSc Cardiovascular Science, MSc Neuroscience, and undergraduate modules in Cellular Control and Developmental Neuroscience. She also contributes to the scholarly community as an Academic Editor for Journal of Developmental Biology, PLoS One, and Developmental Dynamics.
