Dr. Christian Reiß is a historian of science currently working as a research assistant at the Chair of History of Science at the University of Regensburg since 2016. His research bridges the history of life sciences with environmental history, focusing on laboratory animals, experimental systems, and the epistemology of scientific practices. He has been actively involved in academic networks, serving as co-leader of the KNOW-IN research network (2020-2023) and contributing to editorial work at NTM Journal (2018-2023).
- University of Regensburg (2016-present)
- Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (2007-2013)
His research explores the historical ecology of scientific environments, particularly through the lens of aquariums and laboratory infrastructures. His work on the Mexican axolotl traces its journey from natural curiosity to standardized lab organism, examining specimen circulation and regenerative medicine history. He also investigates early kinematography in biology and the intersection of organismic philosophy with postwar architecture.
Reiß's publications analyze diverse topics including colonial ecology, theoretical biology's non-mechanistic ontologies, and the nutritional history of laboratory animals. Recent lectures examine administrative ecology in postwar Germany and the colonial dimensions of ecological science. His scholarly contributions have been recognized with the Caspar Friedrich Wolff Medal (2015) and the German Society for the History of Medicine's Young Researcher Award (2015, shared).
