Christian Munthe

Christian Munthe is a Professor of Practical Philosophy at the University of Gothenburg, specializing in ethics, value, and policy issues at the intersection of health, science, technology, environment, and society. He is a member of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg and serves on national and international ethics councils, including the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare and the ethics council of the Joint Programming Initiative for Antimicrobial Resistance Research (JPIAMR). His research focuses on antibiotic resistance, public health ethics, forensic psychiatry, and sustainability.

Munthe has developed a cross-disciplinary approach, collaborating with experts in medicine, environmental science, law, and economics. He has published nine books and over 70 articles, including influential works on the ethics of risk (2011), screening in healthcare (2012), and hate crime (2017). He co-founded the Centre for Ethics, Law and Mental Health (CELAM) and the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research (CARe), and is a senior researcher at the Urban Safety and Societal Security Research Center (URBSEC).

His current projects include leading initiatives on antibiotic resistance policy (PLATINEA and EDAR) and evidence-based practices in forensic psychiatry (FORevidence). Munthe also advises Swedish and international agencies on ethical frameworks for healthcare, environmental policy, and technology regulation.

Munthe's teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels, focusing on practical philosophy and ethics modules in research leadership training. He frequently contributes to public debates through media commentary and columns in Alba, addressing topics like AI ethics, climate policy, and social justice.
