Dr. Christian Mader is a Researcher and Coordinator of the Research Group 'The Archaeology of Dependency (ArchDepth): Resources, Power and Status Differentiation' at the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies, University of Bonn. His research investigates asymmetrical dependencies in pre-Columbian Andean societies through interdisciplinary approaches combining archaeology, geospatial analysis, and economics.
Education includes a PhD in Anthropology of the Americas (University of Bonn, 2017), an MA in the same field (Bonn, 2013), and a BA in Cultural and Social Anthropology (Free University of Berlin, 2010).
His research focuses on resource dependencies, social stratification, and landscape archaeology in the Andes. Key interests include ancient agricultural systems, mobility networks, and socioeconomic organization, analyzed through geospatial methods, artifact studies, and funerary contexts. His work emphasizes how resource access shaped human cooperation and exploitation.
Recent publications (2022-2025) predominantly explore prehispanic Andean terraces, sacred landscapes, and economic systems, using satellite imagery, field surveys, and interdisciplinary frameworks to analyze ancient land use and dependencies.
He leads the research group ArchDepth, coordinating projects on dependency archaeology and collaborating with institutions like the German Archaeological Institute.
