Christian Krohn-Hansen is a Professor at the University of Oslo's Department of Social Anthropology within the Faculty of Social Sciences. He specializes in political and economic processes with a focus on the Spanish-speaking Caribbean and Latin America, particularly the Dominican Republic and New York. His research explores power dynamics, violence, urban ethnography, environmental politics, and migration. He currently leads two projects: an anthropological study of amber extraction in the Dominican Republic's Cordillera Septentrional and a theoretical book manuscript on political analysis.
He has held administrative roles such as Head of Teaching (2023-2024), MA Program Director (2020-2023), and contributed to academic governance via editorial roles for Anthropos and the Material and Norsk Antropologisk Tidsskrift. His fieldwork spans the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and the U.S., addressing themes like jobless growth, resource politics, and masculinity. Recent publications include Jobless Growth in the Dominican Republic (2022) and edited volumes on state formation and labor studies.
His research emphasizes ethnographic approaches to understanding political and economic challenges in globalized contexts, with a focus on marginalized communities and transnational networks. Current projects aim to bridge material culture studies (amber trade) with theoretical contributions to political anthropology.
