Christian Kravagna is a Professor of Postcolonial Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna since 2006, affiliated with the Institute for Art and Cultural Studies. He specializes in postcolonial studies, global modernisms, migration, representational politics, and institutional critique. Kravagna holds a Magister degree and has held visiting roles at the University of Vienna, Leuphana University Lüneburg, and others. He co-founded the research network Multiple Artistic Mobilities and advises the Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational in London.
His research integrates art history with postcolonial theory, emphasizing decolonial modernism and transnational cultural exchanges. Major works include Transmodern: An art history of contact (2022) and exhibitions like Avant-Garde and Liberation (2024) and Ghosts of the Civil Dead (2016). He has organized influential conferences such as From Alexandria to Tokyo (2020) addressing colonial entanglements.
Teaching focuses on postcolonial theory, migration, and global art history through courses like Postcolonial Perspectives on the mumok Collection (2022) and Race, Art, and Politics in the USA (2016-17). His curatorial work bridges academic research and public engagement, addressing urgent themes in contemporary art and cultural politics.
