Christian Gonzales is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of History at the University of Rhode Island (URI). He joined URI in 2016 after serving as Assistant Professor at CUNY LaGuardia Community College and as an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Wesleyan University. His academic background includes a Ph.D. and M.A. in Early American and Native American history from UC San Diego, and a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology and Classical Archaeology from UC Santa Barbara.
His research explores Native American history with emphasis on:
- Race relations among Native, Anglo, and African-American communities (18th–19th centuries)
- Interactions between Indigenous groups, religious reformers, and enslaved populations
- Cultural preservation under settler colonialism
- Early American slave systems and imperial structures
His publications analyze Indigenous identity formation and resistance within colonial frameworks, with consistent themes of racial dynamics, cultural adaptation, and empire. Awards include the prestigious Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Native American Studies.
