Christian Frost is the Oscar Naddermier Professor of Architecture at the Birmingham School of Architecture, Birmingham City University. He specializes in architectural history with a focus on medieval urbanism, cultural continuity, and the interplay between architecture and festival traditions. Frost holds a degree from the University of Cambridge and an M.Phil. in the History and Philosophy of Architecture from the same institution. His career spans over ten years in architectural practice across the UK and internationally before transitioning to academia in 2001.
Education: BArch (University of Cambridge), M.Phil. in History and Philosophy of Architecture (University of Cambridge). Research interests include medieval urban development, festival spaces, and the transition from classical to Christian architectural paradigms. His seminal work Time, Space and Order: The Making of Medieval Salisbury (2009) examines the city's foundation and evolution. Frost has led projects such as the ARC Arts Centre in Stockton-on-Tees and contributed to exhibitions in London, Frankfurt, Berlin, and Prague.
His recent publications (2018–2025) explore topics like festive architectures, urban rituals, and the symbolic dimensions of medieval city planning. Frost coordinates historical and theoretical modules across the Birmingham School of Architecture while maintaining design teaching roles in the MArch program.
