Christian Burset is a Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame's Notre Dame Law School. He specializes in legal history, focusing on the British Empire and early United States. His research examines legal pluralism, the rule of law, and the interplay between law and economic change.
Education: J.D. and Ph.D. in History from Yale University; A.B. in History (highest honors) from Princeton University.
Research interests include the historical relationship between jurisprudence and party politics, arbitration and specialized courts, and the nature of legal authority in common-law systems. His first book, An Empire of Laws: Legal Pluralism in British Colonial Policy (2023), explores how the 18th-century British Empire shaped colonies through diverse legal systems.
Recent publications analyze legal traditions, advisory opinions, and arbitration’s role in economic systems. Burset previously held a Golieb Fellowship in Legal History at NYU Law and clerked for Judge José A. Cabranes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
