Christian Berggreen

Christian Berggreen is a Professor and Head of the Structures and Safety section within the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). His work spans advanced structural mechanics, composite materials, and fracture analysis, with strong applications in wind energy, aerospace, and offshore systems.

His research focuses on the structural integrity of composite materials, particularly sandwich structures and wind turbine components. Key areas include interfacial crack propagation, mode-mixity effects, energy release rate calculations, and fatigue behavior. He employs both experimental and computational techniques, including finite element modeling, cohesive zone methods, and phase-field modeling to analyze damage and failure mechanisms.

The recent publications reflect a consistent trend toward multi-scale and multi-physics modeling of fracture in anisotropic and composite systems, with increasing emphasis on sustainable and high-performance materials for next-generation engineering applications.

Christian Berggreen has supervised multiple PhD students and is actively involved in major research projects such as CASMaT (Villum Center for Advanced Structural and Material Testing), Green Sustainable Sandwich Composites for Tomorrow's Aircraft Structures, and (Corrosion) Fatigue of Offshore Structures. He collaborates extensively with national and international researchers in the field of structural materials and testing.

He leads experimental and theoretical work on crack kinking, fracture toughness, and fatigue in composites, contributing to safer and more durable engineering designs. His work integrates advanced diagnostics, modeling, and real-world validation.
