Christian Barry

Christian Barry is a Professor at the Research School of Philosophy and Director of the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University (ANU). He holds editorial roles as Co-Editor of Political Philosophy and Associate Editor at Ethics. Previously, he worked at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, the UNDP’s Human Development Report Office, and as a Lecturer at University College Dublin. His research focuses on ethical theory, international justice, and climate ethics, with notable works on global poverty, labor standards in trade, and the ethics of climate mitigation strategies. He currently leads an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant project on The Ethics of Net Zero and co-authors a book on this topic with Garrett Cullity. His work has been supported by grants from the Ford Foundation, Norwegian Research Council, and others. Barry is affiliated with ANU’s Carbon Removal and Climate Economics and Policy research groups.

Education: PhD in Philosophy from Columbia University (2005). Key research interests include moral responsibility, distributive justice, and the ethical dimensions of global challenges. His publications span leading journals like Journal of Political Philosophy and Politics, Philosophy and Economics. Recent work addresses durability in carbon dioxide removal strategies and the implications of contributory value-chain emissions accounting.
