Christian Downie is a Professor and Director of the Governing Energy Transitions (GET) Lab at the Australian National University (ANU), School of Regulation and Global Governance. He holds an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship and has advised Australian government agencies, including the Department of Climate Change and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. His research focuses on energy politics, climate governance, and international relations.
Education: PhD in International Relations (ANU), First Class Honours in Economics (University of Sydney). He has held visiting roles at MIT, LSE, and the London School of Economics. His work bridges academia and policy, emphasizing global energy transitions and climate diplomacy.
Research interests include international climate negotiations, energy geopolitics, and the role of business actors in policy resistance. He leads ANU projects on renewable energy governance in Asia-Pacific and renewables-based trade frameworks. His book Business Battles in the U.S. Energy Sector explores lessons for clean energy transitions.
