Christi-Anne Castro is Associate Professor of Musicology at the University of Michigan, with affiliations in Southeast Asian Studies and World Performance. Her award-winning research examines music, nationalism, and postcolonial identity in the Philippines, notably in her monograph Musical Renderings of the Philippine Nation (Oxford, 2011).
Research interests include:
- Cultural history of 20th-century Philippine music institutions
- Hybridity in Filipino performance traditions (e.g., Binanog dance)
- Decolonization of music education
- Queer and postcolonial interpretations of Southeast Asian arts
Recipient of the Global Filipino Literary Award (2013) and CRLT grants for curriculum development. Current projects investigate aurality, power structures, and ethnographic methodologies in performance contexts.
