Amy Stillman is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Department of American Culture and Director of the Program in Native American Studies (NAS) at the University of Michigan. She holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Musicology at the School of Music, Theater & Dance. Her roles include Undergraduate Advisor for the NAS minor and past director of the Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies program.
Education: Ph.D. in Harvard University (1991). Research focuses on ethnomusicology, Pacific Islands performance traditions, and cultural studies. She is a Grammy-winning co-producer/lyricist for Hawaiian music and teaches courses on cultural performance, critical Indigenous studies, and hula.
Affiliations: Core Faculty in A/PIA Studies and NAS programs. Courses include Asian/Pacific Islander American Cultural Performance and Hula - Creative Practice.
Awards: Two-time Grammy Awards (Best Hawaiian Music Album). Professional contributions blend academic research with artistic practice, emphasizing Indigenous cultural preservation and performance historiography.
