Dr. Chris Willenborg is an Associate Professor and Program Leader in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan. He holds an adjunct position as Professor in the Department of Agriculture, Food, and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on optimizing weed management in agricultural systems, combining basic ecological principles with applied technologies. Key areas include herbicide efficacy, integrated weed management, seed predation by carabid beetles, and crop rotation strategies.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Weed Science from the University of Manitoba, and B.Sc./M.Sc. degrees in Agronomy/Weed Science from the University of Saskatchewan. He teaches undergraduate courses in Pesticides and Crop Protection (PLSC 345), Current Issues in Agronomy (AGRN 375), and graduate courses in Applied Weed Science (PLSC 898) and Advanced Weed Science (PLSC 898).
Research emphasizes weed biology (e.g., cleavers, kochia), ecological interactions (carabid beetle seed predation), and herbicide resistance management in canola and pulse crops. Recent work explores crop rotation impacts on wheat production, flax yield optimization, and glyphosate-resistant weed dynamics.
Over 100 scientific publications span topics like herbicide desiccation effects, seed shatter mechanisms, and agroecosystem pest dynamics. Collaborations integrate agronomic practices with ecological frameworks to address long-term weed management challenges in Prairie cropping systems.
