Professor Chris Rogers is a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Birmingham's School of Civil Engineering. He has held academic roles at Nottingham and Loughborough Universities before joining Birmingham in 1998. His research focuses on infrastructure engineering, future cities, sustainability, resilience, and urban systems. He leads major initiatives like the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC) and directs the £28m National Buried Infrastructure Facility. His work emphasizes robotics for urban infrastructure maintenance, such as self-repairing road systems and pipeline inspection robots. He has secured over £50M in grants and published extensively in geotechnical engineering and urban sustainability. Key roles include Director of Research Integration at UKCRIC and former Chair of the Institution of Civil Engineers' Research, Development & Innovation Panel.
Education: BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering (University of Leeds, 1979) and PhD in Geotechnical Engineering (University of Nottingham). Industrial experience includes structural engineering consultancy and roles in tunneling projects like the Carsington Dam Aqueduct Tunnel.
Research Interests: Sustainable urban infrastructure, resilient city systems, geotechnical processes, underground space utilization, and transdisciplinary urban diagnostics. Notable projects include the Liveable Cities programme grant and Urban Futures consortium, developing methodologies to assess city resilience through extreme future scenarios.
Grants & Awards: Over £50M in grants, including EPSRC Programme Grants (e.g., Liveable Cities, Pipebots). Honors include SFHEA, FCIHT, and Chartered Engineer status. Leadership roles include founding UKCRIC and coordinating national infrastructure research initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Leads UKCRIC's National Buried Infrastructure Facility and collaborates on projects like Self-Repairing Cities and Pipebots robotics. Active in editorial roles for journals like Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology and international conferences.
