Chris Lukinbeal is an Associate Professor and founding Director of the Geographic Information Systems Technology Programs at the University of Arizona's School of Geography and Development. He holds a PhD from San Diego State University and the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on cultural geography, media, cartography, and visual culture, particularly exploring the intersections of cinema, landscape, and spatial representation.
He has served as Past President of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers, a founding editor of the Media Geography at Mainz book series, and an Associate Editor for the American Association of Geographer’s journal Geohumanities. In 2020, he was a GLK Guest Lecturer at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, teaching a course in the 'Globalisation, Media, and Culture' MA program.
Key research themes include cinematic landscapes, GIS applications, and the geographies of media production. His work bridges film studies, urban geography, and cartographic theory, with publications examining topics like Hollywood's spatial politics, cinematic cartography, and the cultural significance of film locations.
Notable contributions include edited volumes such as Media’s Mapping Impulse (2019) and The Geography of Cinema (2008). He actively engages in interdisciplinary collaboration, combining GIS technologies with archival research to analyze film production landscapes, as seen in his work on Old Tucson Studios and San Diego's film industry.
