Professor Chris Lonsdale is a full-time faculty member at the Department of Management, Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham, where he holds the position of Professor of Procurement and Supply Management. He has been with the Business School for nearly three decades, holding various leadership roles including Programme Director of the MBA in Strategy and Procurement Management, Head of the Procurement and Operations Management Group, and Director of Research for the Department of Management.
His educational background includes a BA and PhD, and he is recognized as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (FCIPS). He began his academic career at the University of Hull in 1992 before joining the University of Birmingham in 1993, where he advanced from teaching assistant to Professor in 2020.
Chris Lonsdale’s research centers on procurement and supply management, with key interests in procurement as a profession, procurement strategy, social value via public procurement, buyer-supplier relationships, and trust in contracting. His work bridges academic rigor with practical application, collaborating extensively with organizations such as Rolls-Royce plc, NHS, IBM, Molson Coors, BP, and government departments like the Department for Education and Skills and the Department of Health. His current research explores the professionalization of procurement, social value, make/buy decisions in aerospace, and political science topics such as state-finance relations.
His recent publications span high-impact journals and focus on blockchain in remanufacturing, AI in circular economy, team dynamics in sourcing, social value in public procurement, and trust mechanisms in buyer-supplier relationships—demonstrating a consistent trajectory in sustainable, ethical, and strategic procurement.
His scientific honors include:

Professor Lonsdale has successfully secured research funding from EPSRC, ESRC, NHS NIHR, and other agencies. He has supervised numerous students and contributed to national policy through work with the National Audit Office and Treasury Select Committee. He teaches across undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive programs, including modules on value chains, outsourcing, and strategic procurement.
He is an active member of the Procurement and Operations Management Group and continues to lead impactful research that informs both academic discourse and public policy.
