Dr. Chris Le is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta. He serves as Director of the Analytical and Environmental Toxicology Division, where he leads research at the intersection of analytical chemistry, environmental health, and biomedical applications.
Dr. Le's educational background includes:
- PhD (1993) in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia
- MSc (1988) in Chemistry from Brock University
- MSc (1986) from Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences
- BSc (1979) in Chemistry from Wuhan University
Dr. Le's research focuses on developing novel analytical techniques for environmental contaminants and biomedical applications. His work spans multiple areas including arsenic speciation and toxicology, CRISPR-based detection systems, DNAzyme technology, and nanosystems for drug delivery. He has made significant contributions to understanding arsenic metabolism, developing sensitive detection methods for environmental contaminants, and creating innovative molecular diagnostic tools. His laboratory has pioneered techniques for the detection of nucleic acids, proteins, and environmental pollutants with applications in both environmental monitoring and clinical diagnostics.
Analysis of Dr. Le's recent publications reveals a strong focus on CRISPR-Cas technology for molecular detection, particularly for viral pathogens including SARS-CoV-2 variants. His work bridges analytical chemistry with molecular biology to develop highly sensitive detection platforms. There's also a consistent thread of research on arsenic speciation, metabolism, and toxicity, demonstrating his longstanding expertise in environmental toxicology. His publications show interdisciplinary collaboration across chemistry, biology, environmental science, and clinical medicine.
Dr. Le has received numerous prestigious awards and recognitions:
- Distinguished University Professor at the University of Alberta (2011)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2010)
- Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Bioanalytical Technology and Environmental Health (2010-2017)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) (2016)
- Martha Cook Piper Research Prize (2000)
- E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship from NSERC (2000)
- Multiple awards from the Canadian Society for Chemistry including the Maxxam Award and W.A.E. McBryde Medal
Dr. Le actively mentors graduate students (MSc and PhD), undergraduate students, and post-doctoral fellows. His research has been supported by significant grants including the Canada Research Chair program and various research council funding. He serves on editorial boards for prestigious journals including Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Health Perspectives, demonstrating his leadership in the scientific community.
As Director of the Analytical and Environmental Toxicology Division, Dr. Le leads a multidisciplinary team that combines expertise in analytical chemistry, molecular biology, and environmental health sciences. His laboratory develops cutting-edge technologies for environmental monitoring and clinical applications, with particular emphasis on translating basic research into practical solutions for public health challenges.
