Dr. Chris Hanley is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton's Cancer Sciences Unit. He specializes in understanding how the tumour microenvironment influences cancer progression, particularly focusing on cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). His research employs cutting-edge techniques such as single-cell RNA-sequencing and 3D organoid co-cultures. A key achievement includes identifying NOX4 as a therapeutic target, leading to patented NOX inhibitors (WO2019086579) with ongoing clinical trials.
Education: BSc Biochemistry (Imperial College London, 2008), MRes (University of Southampton, 2011), PhD in Cancer Research (University of Southampton, 2014). Postdoctoral positions at Southampton Cancer Sciences Unit and Johns Hopkins Centre for Cell Dynamics.
Teaching responsibilities include co-leading the MSc Genomics Dissertation Module and leading sessions in the MRes Quantitative Cell Biology and Protein Biology courses. Currently supervising three PhD students.
Active research projects include CRUK-funded initiatives investigating CAF roles in immunotherapy resistance and lung cancer progression. Collaborations with institutions like Gilead Sciences and Rosetrees Trust highlight interdisciplinary research efforts.
