Chris Gehrz is a Professor of History at Bethel University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of History, Philosophy, and Political Science. He joined Bethel in 2003 and specializes in military/diplomatic history, modern Europe, and Pietism. His educational background includes a B.A. from the College of William and Mary (1996), and M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University (1998, 2000, 2002).
Gehrz's research focuses on Pietism's historical impact and contemporary relevance, Christian higher education, and the history of Bethel University. His work explores intersections of faith, history, and culture, with secondary interests in sports history and transnational evangelical movements. His publications demonstrate consistent engagement with religious renewal, historical memory, and Christian practice.
Gehrz has received the Edgren Scholars Program award for student-faculty research (2014) and the Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching (2009). He maintains active professional involvement as Program Chair for the 2024 Conference on Faith and History and serves on the editorial board of Fides et Historia. His outreach includes frequent presentations at churches, museums, and academic venues on topics ranging from Charles Lindbergh's spirituality to the war in Ukraine.
