Dr. Chris Coggins is Professor of Geography and Asian Studies at Bard College at Simon's Rock. He directs research on sacred forests and human-environment systems in Asia, notably China's fengshui woodlands.
Research Interests: Examines biocultural conservation, spiritual ecology, and landscape politics. His work combines field surveys, ethnography, and ecological analysis to study community-managed forests.
Publications: Focuses on sacred groves in China, conservation conflicts in Tibet, and sustainability strategies. His books analyze how cultural practices shape biodiversity protection.
Fieldwork: Leads multi-year projects in Fujian and Jiangxi provinces, supported by NSF, Luce Foundation, and others. Collaborates with ecologists and local communities.
Teaching: Mentors students in political ecology, Asian studies, and field methodology. Founded the Experimental Archaeology Lab.
