Associate Professor Chris Cazzonelli is a Plant Molecular Biologist at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE), Western Sydney University. His research focuses on environmental epigenetics, plant stress acclimation, and carotenoid metabolism. He leads the Environmental Epigenetics Laboratory (EELab), exploring how environmental stimuli influence genetic and metabolic processes in plants, with applications in crop improvement and sustainable agriculture.
Education: BSc (Hons) and PhD in Botany from the University of Queensland (2002). Postdoctoral training included a USDA fellowship (2002-2005) and roles at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology (2006-2010). Recognized with the Goldacre Medal (2010) and USDA awards for postdoctoral excellence.
Research Interests: Genetic regulatory mechanisms in plants, metabolic feedback loops between plastids and nuclei, stress memory formation, and carotenoid regulation for photoprotection. Specializes in protected cropping technologies, precision pollination, and horticultural tree genomics. Utilizes synthetic biology, next-generation sequencing, and omics approaches.
Key Projects: Optimizing crop resilience under environmental changes (light, CO2, drought), developing smart films for greenhouses, and advancing next-generation orchard genetics for almond and mango. Explores bioacoustic impacts on plant cells and mechanical stress memory formation.
Awards: 2010 Goldacre Medal, USDA Certificates of Merit (2003-05), USDA-ARS Postdoc Fellowship (2001-03), and Australian Postgraduate Award (1996-99).
Grants and Collaborations: Focuses on multidisciplinary projects with industry and academic partners to enhance agroecosystem sustainability. Lab integrates cutting-edge tools like metabolomics and transcriptomics for translational research.
