Chris Carr is Professor of Textile Technology at the School of Design, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, University of Leeds, having joined in 2013 and served as Head of School until September 2020. Previously, he held positions at UMIST (1992-2009) as Professor and Deputy Head of Materials, and research roles at CSIRO (Australia) and USDA (USA).
His educational background includes:
- BSc in Chemistry, University College Cardiff (1980)
- PhD in Surface Chemistry of Wool, University College Cardiff (1983)
Research focuses on modifying fibrous materials for enhanced performance through surface chemistry analysis. Key areas span textile science, coloration processes, historical textile conservation, sustainable recycling methods, healthcare textiles, and hair chemistry. Current projects address biofilm control in laundry systems and lactam-based biofilm-ready surfaces through international industry collaborations.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Weavers Company Silver Medal (2008) for Textile Education and Research contributions
- Society of Dyers and Colourists Gold Medal (2015) for Textile & Colour Education achievements
Professor Carr serves as a Trustee of the Society of Dyers and Colourists and holds Liveryman status in the Dyers Company, maintaining active roles in editorial boards of international textile research journals.
