Chris Belshaw is an Honorary Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the University of York, where he has served as a part-time Visiting Lecturer since 1998, teaching one to two courses annually. He held full-time positions at the University of California, Santa Barbara (Lecturer in Philosophy, 1989–1993), St Martin’s College, Lancaster, and Lancaster University, as well as a Senior Lecturer role at the Open University (1994–2015). He also served part-time as Project Leader for Medical School Ethics at the University of Leeds (2005–2007). His honorary roles include Teaching Fellow at the University of York (2011–present) and Visiting Fellow at the University of St Andrews’ Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs (2013).
Belshaw studied philosophy at the University of York, where he was tutored by Tom Baldwin and Andrew Ward, and later pursued research at UC Santa Barbara under Nathan Salmon. His career includes extensive teaching across diverse audiences, from university students to schoolchildren, emphasizing applied ethics, life/death values, environmental philosophy, and related metaphysical/aesthetic themes.
His research interests focus on theoretical applied ethics, including the nature of personhood, animal minds, and environmental ethics. Notable topics include the badness of death, procreative ethics, and the ethical treatment of animals. He has delivered invited talks on these subjects at institutions such as the University of Glasgow, University of Liverpool, and the Wellcome Institute.
Belshaw’s articles and books explore ethical dilemmas in death, immortality, environmental stewardship, and animal rights, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach. His publications often challenge anthropocentric assumptions and advocate for broader considerations of life’s value. While no scientific awards are explicitly mentioned, his contributions to philosophy are evident through his prolific writing and teaching.
In advising and grants, though no specific student advisees are listed, Belshaw has engaged in collaborative projects like the Medical School Ethics work at Leeds and has participated in various academic initiatives. His research has been supported through institutional affiliations and invited lectureships.
Belshaw is affiliated with the Department of Philosophy at York and has collaborated with the University of St Andrews’ ethics centre. His work bridges theoretical philosophy with practical applications, particularly in ethics and environmental thought.
