Chris Barker is an Associate Professor at The American University in Cairo (AUC) in the Department of Political Science. His research and teaching focus on the history of political thought, imperialism, liberalism, and theories of punishment.
- Current research examines John Stuart Mill’s role in the British imperial project and the history of subjectivity.
- He is the author of Educating Liberty: Democracy and Aristocracy in JS Mill’s Political Thought and co-editor of People Power: Popular Sovereignty from Machiavelli to Late Modernity.
- Prior to joining AUC, he held positions at Southwestern College, Ohio University, Boston College, and Harvard University.
His work bridges historical and contemporary analyses of liberal democratic theory, with interests in mass incarceration, mental independence, and the evolution of subjectivity.
