Dr. Chris Askew is a Senior Lecturer in Psychological Methods and Statistics at the University of Surrey's School of Psychology, part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He leads the Extended Reality (XR) Lab, focusing on using VR technology to study fear and anxiety development. His research explores mechanisms of fear acquisition, resilience, and interventions in children and adults. Askew holds a D.Phil. in Psychology from the University of Sussex (2006), an MRes in Psychological Methods (2003), and a BA in Applied Psychology (2002). He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and received the 2018 SHOUT Teaching Award.
Research Grants include a £674k ESRC grant (2024–2028) on vicarious fear learning in children, and prior grants on fear prevention and treatment. He supervises PhD students in fear development and VR applications, with current advisees Sean Gonzalez and Charlotte Mills. Askew teaches statistics modules for BSc and MSc psychology students, including PSY1035 and PSYM153.
Key research themes include observational fear learning pathways, fear reduction through positive modeling, and childhood anxiety's socio-cultural influences. His lab applies VR to study fear mechanisms and interventions, with findings published in Developmental Psychology, Emotion, and Journal of Abnormal Psychology.
