Chris Ashford

Professor Chris Ashford serves as Deputy Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Exchange) and Professor of Law and Society in the Faculty of Business and Law at Northumbria University. As the University Senior Sponsor for LGBTQ+ Equality, his work bridges academic leadership and social justice advocacy. He holds an MA in Teaching & Learning and specializes in law and sexuality, queer theory, and transformative approaches to legal education.

His research examines:

• Normative challenges to sexual assumptions through queer theoretical frameworks
• Technology-enhanced pedagogy and apprenticeship models in legal training
• Regulatory impacts on LGBTQ+ communities and counter-cultural groups
• Pandemic-era adaptations of intimacy practices and their legal implications

Ashford's recent scholarship predominantly explores socio-legal dimensions of gender, sexuality, and identity. His 2020-2024 publications demonstrate strong focus on:

• Pandemic-related shifts in sexual practices and regulations
• Critical approaches to legal education and feminist/queer pedagogies
• Transgender legal recognition frameworks
• Historical and contemporary policing of sexuality

Methodologically, he employs queer theory, socio-legal analysis, and critical pedagogy across diverse contexts from digital spaces to policy reform.
