Chitralekha Basu

Chitralekha Basu serves as Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Cologne and holds the Chair for Empirical Democratic Theory. She is an Associated Member of the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute: Markets & Public Policy since 2020.

She earned her PhD in Political Science from the University of Rochester in 2017. Her research examines how competitive elections function as instruments of representation and accountability, with particular focus on elite influence over voter preferences in democracies. Core interests include electoral politics, voting behavior, political representation, and historical political development across European contexts.

Recent publications analyze issue engagement incentives in campaigns and media impacts on economic voting, employing theoretical and empirical approaches to understand voter behavior with strong emphasis on British politics. Her work appears in leading journals including Journal of Theoretical Politics, Electoral Studies, British Journal of Political Science, and World Politics.
