Chitralekha Basu

Chitralekha Basu serves as Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Cologne, holding the Chair for Empirical Democratic Theory. She is an Associated Member of the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute: Markets & Public Policy and actively contributes to the Center for Comparative and Collective Political Behavior (CCCP) as an Executive Manager. Her academic work bridges theoretical and empirical approaches to democratic processes.

Her research centers on democratic theory and electoral accountability, with particular focus on how political elites influence voter preferences and priorities in competitive democracies. She examines failures and successes of elections as representation mechanisms, integrating perspectives from comparative politics, political behavior, and historical institutional analysis. Geographically, her work emphasizes the United Kingdom and broader European contexts, exploring public opinion dynamics and long-term political development.
