Chisa Hidaka, MD, is an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Dance at Barnard College. Her unique career bridges medical expertise, dance artistry, and scientific research. She teaches 'Applied Anatomy of Human Movement,' integrating her background as an orthopedic surgeon, choreographer, and researcher in musculoskeletal tissue repair. Hidaka holds an MD from Cornell University and conducted over $1M in NIH-funded research at Hospital for Special Surgery, publishing 30+ peer-reviewed articles on topics like gene therapy for cartilage repair and spinal fusion.
Education: Barnard College (BS, Dance, 1986); Weill Cornell Medical College (MD, 1994).
Research Interests: Merging anatomical science with artistic expression, including underwater inter-species dance collaborations with dolphins. Innovations in gene therapy for orthopaedic conditions, biomaterials for tissue repair, and surgical outcome measurement. Her Dolphin Dance Project films have won international acclaim, blending art and marine biology.
Grants & Awards: NIH/Arthritis Foundation grants (2001–2014); LMCC grant (2014); Silver award at Our World Underwater Competition (2016). Currently chairs the Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship at HSS.
Labs & Teams: Former director of the Tissue Engineering Research Group at HSS. Collaborates with marine cinematographers and dancers on interdisciplinary projects.
