Dr. Chinyere Osuji is an Associate Professor in the Department of African American Studies at the University of Maryland. She holds a PhD in Sociology from UCLA, an MA in Sociology from Harvard University, and a BA in Sociology and Spanish from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Previously, she was at Rutgers University-Camden and a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Africana Studies.
Her research focuses on ethnoracial boundaries in social life, particularly among Black-White couples in Brazil and the United States. Her 2019 book Boundaries of Love: Interracial Marriage and the Meaning of Race examines how over 100 qualitative interviews inform these dynamics. She is currently writing a book exploring how African nurses navigate ethnoracial boundaries in professional settings.
Her work has been recognized with awards from the American Sociological Association and the Population Association of America, and has been supported by the National Science Foundation. Media features include BBC, NPR, and op-eds in The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Society Pages.
Dr. Osuji’s interdisciplinary research integrates comparative sociology, migration studies, and cultural anthropology. Her grants and fellowships highlight her contributions to understanding race, identity, and social policy. She speaks fluent Spanish and Portuguese and maintains dual cultural ties between Chicago and Imo State, Nigeria.
