Chie Togami is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at SUNY-ESF, specializing in the intersections of environmental sociology, gender studies, and social movements. She holds a PhD and has taught courses ranging from introductory environmental studies to capstone research seminars. Her work examines how funding sources, particularly philanthropy, shape climate activism strategies, and how gender dynamics influence environmental movement participation and leadership.
Research focuses include environmental justice, air quality advocacy, and the legacy of industrial extraction. Notable projects include a podcast tracing U.S. Steel's environmental impact and collaborative work analyzing the Biden-Harris lead service line replacement initiative. She has authored/co-authored book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on gendered mobilization patterns and community responses to pollution.
Teaching experience includes instructor-of-record roles for Environmental Justice, Intro to Environmental Studies, and Sociology courses at SUNY-ESF and the University of Pittsburgh.
