Dr Chia-chi Liu is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sydney's Northern Clinical School, leading the Cardiac Membrane Biology Laboratory at the Kolling Medical Research Institute. She holds a visiting scholar position at the Heart Research Institute and collaborates internationally with institutions in Denmark, Japan, Switzerland, and the United States.
- MSc in Cell and Molecular Biology, Taipei Medical University
- Second MSc in Biotechnology, University of New South Wales
- PhD in Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences, Macquarie University
Her research focuses on oxidative stress mechanisms in cardiovascular disease, pregnancy-related disorders, and cancer therapy. She investigates redox-regulated Na+/K+-ATPase function, develops oxidative stress biomarkers for preeclampsia, and pioneers FXYD protein analogues for cancer treatment. Her work bridges molecular biology with clinical translation through collaborations in drug design and phase II clinical trials.
Key publication themes include oxidative regulation of ion pumps in heart failure (Journal of Biological Chemistry, Circulation Research), FXYD protein roles in cancer stem cell targeting (Journal of Clinical Investigation), and biomarker development for pregnancy complications (JCEM, Biology of Sex Differences).
- Heart Research Australia Project Awards (2025-2026, 2016-2018, 2012)
- Ramsay Research and Teaching Fund (2023, 2015-2016)
- EMCR Boost Travel Grant (2022)
- Best Early-Postdoctoral Publication Award (2010)
Dr Liu supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students with a research-led teaching philosophy emphasizing critical thinking and laboratory skills. Her international collaborations span molecular modeling at Aarhus University, cancer stem cell studies at Kanazawa University, and clinical trials with the National University Hospital in Copenhagen.
