Dr. Chhandak Basu is a Professor in the Department of Biology at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). He also holds significant research affiliations with NASA, currently serving as a Visiting Scientist at NASA-Ames Research Center's Space Science and Astrobiology Division. Previously, he was a Research Affiliate at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (2020-2024) and a Visiting Faculty member at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2023). His academic career spans teaching advanced biology courses including Biotechnology (BIOL 470) and DNA Techniques (BIOL 472).

Dr. Basu's research spans multiple interdisciplinary fields at the intersection of biotechnology, environmental science, and astrobiology. His work focuses on how plants and microbes survive in extreme environmental conditions, with particular emphasis on genetic transformation for biofuel development. He investigates plant responses to drought, flood, and salt stress, with special attention to medicinal plants like turmeric. At NASA, his research explores astrobiology through the study of extremophiles in planetary analog environments, examining how microbial life might survive on other worlds.
Dr. Basu's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on extremophile biology, particularly halophiles (salt-loving organisms) and their adaptation to extreme environments relevant to astrobiology. His work bridges plant biotechnology for biofuel development with space biology research, examining stress responses in organisms like Dunaliella salina and Halobacterium salinarum. A significant portion of his recent work investigates turmeric's physiological responses to drought stress, aligning with his interest in medicinal plants and climate change impacts.

Dr. Basu is known for his strong mentorship of undergraduate researchers, reflected in his Biology Mentor Award from the Council on Undergraduate Research.
Dr. Basu directs the Laboratory of Plant and Microbial Biotechnology and Astrobiology Research at CSUN. His lab collaborates extensively with NASA facilities including Ames Research Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as well as Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is a member of the International Standards for Space Omics Processing board and previously served on the Board of Directors for the American Council for Medicinally Active Plants (2021-2023).
