Amy Grunden is the William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor and University Faculty Scholar at North Carolina State University's Department of Microbiology, where she also serves as Assistant Director of NCARS. She holds a Ph.D. and B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Florida. Her research program focuses on extremophiles – microorganisms thriving in extreme environments – with dual goals of understanding their adaptive mechanisms and harnessing them for biotechnological applications.
Her research integrates synthetic biology and microbial physiology to develop solutions for environmental challenges, including:
- Decontamination of organophosphorus nerve agents
- Engineering stress-tolerant plants for marginal environments
- Optimizing microalgal biofuel production
- Developing synthetic carbon fixation pathways
