Jose Alonso is the William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor and University Faculty Scholar in the Department of Plant Biology at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on understanding the molecular circuits plants use to integrate environmental and developmental signals, with particular emphasis on the interaction between ethylene and auxin plant hormones in regulating root growth.
Dr. Alonso's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Biology and Biochemistry from Universitat de Valencia, Spain (1994)
- B.S. in Biochemistry from Universitat de Valencia, Spain (1988)
Dr. Alonso's laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach combining genetics, molecular biology, genomics, metabolomics, and cell biology to uncover complex multistep integration processes with spatial and temporal components. His work has elucidated how ethylene activates auxin biosynthetic genes in root meristems and how auxin transport sensitizes cells to ethylene responses. He has deciphered the first complete auxin biosynthetic pathway in plants and demonstrated that translation regulation represents a key aspect of hormone response mechanisms. His research bridges fundamental plant biology with innovative technology development, including recombineering approaches, ribosome footprinting, and metabolic biosensors.
His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on advancing plant synthetic biology, developing new gene editing and stacking technologies (like the DASH system), and elucidating molecular mechanisms of hormone signaling and integration. His work spans from fundamental plant biology to applied biotechnology, with particular focus on translation regulation, hormone crosstalk, and developing molecular tools for plant research, reflecting his commitment to both basic science and practical applications in agriculture.
Dr. Alonso has received notable honors including:
- William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor
- University Faculty Scholar
Dr. Alonso has secured significant research funding from the National Science Foundation, including multiple EAGER grants and larger projects totaling millions of dollars. His current research focuses on developing new methods to study gene-specific translation regulation (TRTech-PGR), identifying translational hormone-response gene networks, enhancing homologous recombination in plants using Lambda-Red technology, developing multi-hormone reporters for plant phenotyping, and investigating metabolic networks of auxin biosynthesis. His laboratory actively engages in outreach activities through the Plants4kids platform to promote interest in biology, computers, and engineering among middle and high school students.
His laboratory combines basic biological research with the development and implementation of new genetic technologies, including gene modification in chromosomal context, high-resolution whole-genome analysis of translation, and metabolic biosensors. The group's work has significant implications for both fundamental understanding of plant biology and potential applications in agriculture, particularly in developing crops with improved responses to environmental stresses.
