Professor Cheryl Mcewan is a leading geographer at Durham University specializing in postcolonial development, cultural politics, and ethical consumption. Affiliated with the Department of Geography, she holds a PhD from Loughborough University and has held academic positions at Swansea, Birmingham, and Durham since 2003.
Her research spans three interconnected themes: (1) Ethical consumption in the Global South, including ESRC-funded work on sustainable food systems in Brazil/China/South Africa; (2) Citizenship and democratic transformation in South Africa, examining gendered experiences and ethical trade in the wine industry; (3) Decolonial theory in geography, explored through her Routledge publications. Current projects include mobile app development for sustainable wildflower harvesting with Flower Valley Conservation Trust.
Key publications reveal consistent focus on postcolonial ethics, with recent work analyzing pandemic street art, solar energy transitions, and multispecies storytelling. Her 15 most recent articles demonstrate methodological diversity across South Africa, East Africa, and the UK, emphasizing place-based ethical economies and challenging Eurocentric development paradigms.
