Dr. Cheryl Gray is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Montclair State University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences, where she directs the CARES Lab (Cultivating and Researching Employee Support). Her research examines workplace social support dynamics, employee well-being, and the unintended consequences of help behaviors in organizational settings.
Gray's research investigates how well-intentioned support can become counterproductive, causing psychological strain when mismatched with recipient needs. Her pioneering work identifies mechanisms linking unhelpful support to burnout, disengagement, and boundary management challenges, particularly in remote work contexts.
Publications consistently analyze support transaction failures across diverse contexts: leadership interactions, pandemic workplace adaptations, gaming environments, and caregiver support systems. Methodologically, she develops measurement instruments and tests mediation models explaining support effectiveness.
Gray contributes to organizational psychology through the 'Indigo Podcast' and industry collaborations. She teaches courses on work psychology, leadership, and research methods while mentoring students through the CARES Lab.
