Chenwei Liao is an Associate Professor and Associate Director for Graduate Programs at Michigan State University's School of Human Resources and Labor Relations (SHRLR), housed within the College of Social Science. He holds a PhD in Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management from the University of Illinois at Chicago, an M.S. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and a B.A. in Sociology from Renmin University of China. His research focuses on leadership dynamics, particularly servant leadership, leader-follower relationships, and idiosyncratic deals (i-deals), supported by grants from the NSF, SHRM Foundation, and other institutions. His work has been published in top-tier journals such as the Academy of Management Journal and Journal of Applied Psychology.
Dr. Liao teaches leadership courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels and serves on editorial boards for Journal of Management, Personnel Psychology, and Research in Human Resource Management. He actively participates in SHRLR's Doctoral Program Committee and Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. His research bridges organizational behavior and human resource management, emphasizing how leadership practices influence employee outcomes across diverse cultural and contextual settings.
Key awards include grants from the National Science Foundation and recognition from the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation, among others. His recent work explores servant leadership's role in fostering employee engagement, the impact of cultural differences on leadership effectiveness, and the interplay between idiosyncratic deals and team performance.
Dr. Liao's contributions extend to editorial service and academic leadership, reflecting his commitment to advancing scholarship in human resources and labor relations.
