He holds concurrent roles such as National Expert Special Professor (China University of Geosciences, Beijing) and has served as Changjiang Scholar Professor (China University of Geosciences, Wuhan). Previously, he was a Full Professor and later Professor Emeritus at York University, Toronto (Canada), with cross-appointments in Earth and Space Science and Engineering, and Geography. His doctoral studies were conducted at the University of Ottawa, where his dissertation was recognized as the best in 1994.
Cheng’s research focuses on mathematical geocomplexity theory and GIS methods for modeling nonlinear geological processes and mineral resource prediction. He has authored over 300 journal papers and 20 book chapters, contributing to discoveries of mineral deposits worldwide. His awards include the Krumbein Medal (IAMG’s highest honor) and China’s State Science and Technology Progress Award.
He served as IAMG President (2012-2016), IUGS President (2016-2020), and member of ISC’s Committee of Science Planning (2019-2021).
