Chen Wei

Chen Wei serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Systems Biology at the College of Life Sciences, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), while also holding the position of Vice Dean at the Institute for Frontier and Interdisciplinary Sciences. Previously, he was a tenured full professor at both the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine and Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Germany.

His academic credentials include:

• PhD in Molecular Genetics from Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics (2002-2006)
• Master's degree in Medical Genetics from West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University (1999-2002)
• Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Xiamen University (1989-1993)

Chen Wei's research program centers on systems biology and genomics, employing multi-omics sequencing and high-throughput screening technologies to investigate gene regulatory mechanisms under physiological and pathological conditions. His laboratory pursues highly interdisciplinary projects including evolutionary studies of gene regulation, RNA post-transcriptional regulation, tumor heterogeneity analysis, CRISPR/Cas9-based gene screening, and organoid modeling of tumor development. This integrative approach combines wet and dry experimental methodologies to address fundamental biological questions with translational implications.

Chen Wei has received significant recognition including Shenzhen Nanshan District Leading Talent (Class A) designation.

As a principal investigator, Chen Wei has secured substantial research funding throughout his career. Between 2009-2015, he obtained over 10 research grants totaling more than €7 million from the European Union, German government, and industry partners. Since returning to China in 2016, he has secured 24.71 million yuan in research funding from national, provincial, and municipal sources. His laboratory currently comprises 4 research assistant professors, 2 postdoctoral fellows, 3 research assistants, and 7 graduate students, reflecting his capacity to lead a substantial research enterprise.

Chen Wei's laboratory maintains state-of-the-art facilities for genomic and systems biology research. The team actively develops novel genomics assays based on next-generation sequencing technologies while investigating post-transcriptional gene regulation mechanisms and their roles in human diseases. The research environment fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and provides comprehensive training for junior researchers.
